Policies and guidance
Help keep the library a quiet, welcoming place to study, and its collections available to everyone.
Library rules
- Keep the library silent, and do not use mobile phones inside. Security staff may confiscate phones used in the library.
- Do not eat, drink or sleep in the library, or put your feet on the desks.
- Leave bags and briefcases in the cloakroom and baggage area.
- Leave books you used on the tables for staff to re-shelve.
- Do not leave personal books or files on a desk for more than ten minutes, and do not reserve seats in advance.
- Do not write on, underline or tear library materials, and handle ink with care.
- Use the bins provided for litter.
- Stealing or attempting to steal library property is a punishable offence.
Borrowing and charges
Late returns incur a daily charge set by the library from time to time. Lost or damaged items are charged at the current market price plus an administrative cost.
Copyright
Copy only what copyright law allows for your study or research. The library’s guidance is to copy no more than 10% of a work for academic purposes, but what counts as fair dealing depends on the work and how you use it. Unauthorised copying can be a criminal offence, so ask a librarian if you are unsure.
Research integrity
Presenting copied material without acknowledging its source is plagiarism. Cite every source in the style your course requires, and use the library’s similarity index check before you submit.
